Our Why
The core of The Good Plant Company's mission began with a healthy dose of Rudy Mancke, the beloved South Carolina naturalist and host of NatureScene, and quite a bit of precocious exploration. The woods and wetlands outside of Charleston, South Carolina were a treasure trove of dense, complex ecosystems and a wonderful place to nurture a love for the natural world. These early childhood experiences matured into a deep-seated respect for the complexity inherent in our native landscapes.
The Good Plant Company was built on the idea that every managed landscape is an opportunity to increase the biological wealth of our own properties. Leveraging decades of cultivation experience, we curate regionally-adapted, Southeastern native species to serve as the functional building blocks for your property. Our focus is on the aesthetic beauty and ecological performance of every species we cultivate.
As the Southeast region continues to grow and evolve, the role of the managed landscape has shifted. With natural habitats becoming increasingly fragmented, the plants within our managed landscapes must be high-performing; we need them to do more than fill space.
The Good Plant Company exists to bridge that gap—shifting outdoor spaces from solely ornamental displays into beautiful, living infrastructure that sustains our local ecology.
This is how we define "Good".
