Verbena hastata (Zones 3–8) provides architectural verticality in the Southeastern landscape. Its slender, violet-blue "candelabra" spikes bloom progressively from the bottom up, offering a distinct structural texture that persists from mid-summer through early fall. As a species, it remains a tidy, upright anchor for stabilizing wet areas without flopping or crowding neighboring plants.

In our region, this is a vital Specialist Host for the Common Buckeye butterfly and a primary pollen source for the specialist Verbena Bee.

Performance & Site Care

While typically found in wetlands and rain gardens, Blue Vervain is adaptable to average garden soil once established and mulched well. It is a useful choice for heavy clay that fluctuates between seasonal saturation and late-summer dry spells. To manage the risk of powdery mildew during humid nights, space plants 18–24 inches apart to allow for sufficient air movement. The dark seed heads provide winter interest and a food source for birds.
