Penstemon digitalis (Zones 3-8), is a versatile native that brings vertical structure and elegance to the early summer garden. Unlike many other Beardtongues, this species is incredibly adaptable, standing its ground in the garden without the need for staking.
This plant is high-value Specialist Bee Forage, specifically designed for long-tongued bees and hummingbirds. The "beardtongue" inside the flower tube forces bumblebees to wiggle deep inside, ensuring a messy and effective pollen exchange. It is a critical nectar source during the late spring gap when early blooms have faded but summer stars haven't yet arrived. After the flowers pass, the architectural seed pods remain upright, providing visual interest and a food source for songbirds into the winter.
Performance & Site Care
This is one of the most adaptable natives for the NC Piedmont. While many Penstemon species require the gritty, fast-draining soils of the West, P. digitalis is a verified Clay Specialist that handles our heavy, moisture-retentive red clay with ease. It thrives in Full Sun to Part Shade, making it a perfect "bridge" plant for wood-line edges or transitional garden beds. To keep the plant tidy and encourage a second flush of flowers, we recommend a quick de-heading with a hedge trimmer; this extends the bloom time and manages re-seeding in one go. It is remarkably Deer-Resistant and stays in a polite clump, making it a reliable Soil Stabilizer or Living Border.
