Spiraea tomentosa (Zones 3–8) is a standout deciduous shrub of the southeastern wetlands, prized for its upright, slender wands topped with dense, fuzzy spires of rose-pink flowers. Unlike common ornamental spiraeas, this straight species provides essential structure and late-summer color. Its foliage is equally impressive, transitioning from a deep, leathery green to a brilliant reddish-gold in the fall.

As a high-value Specialist Host for the Blinded Sphinx moth and a favorite of the Spring Azure butterfly, this shrub is a frequent destination for native pollinators.

Performance & Site Care

Steeplebush is a Clay Specialist, thriving in the heavy, moist soils often found in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain. Its predictable, upright habit makes it an excellent choice for challenging spots.

S. tomentosa is a species that benefits from good airflow, so don't cram it in a corner. Thrives in full sun but requires consistent moisture to look its best. It is a natural fit for Rain Gardens or low-lying areas. We've found that normal garden soil is fine, once established, with a healthy layer of mulch.

To keep a refined shape in a managed garden, you can deadhead spent flower spires in mid-summer to encourage a second flush of blooms. For a more compact, rejuvenated form, it can be pruned back to 12" in late winter.
