Swamp Rose Mallow

The 1997 NC Wildflower of the Year, Muenchhusia moscheutos (Zones 4-9), formerly Hibiscus moscheutos, brings a tropical, "dinner-plate" aesthetic to the temperate garden. Honored as the 1997 NC Wildflower of the Year, this robust perennial is famous for its massive blooms—often reaching 8 inches in diameter—that appear in mid-to-late summer. While each flower lasts only a single day, the plant is a prolific producer, with new blossoms opening daily for several months, ensuring a constant display of creamy white petals and deep crimson centers.

A Specialist Pollinator Hub

This species is an essential powerhouse for local biodiversity. It serves as a vital host for more than 20 species of butterflies and moths, providing the necessary forage for a wide variety of caterpillars. The massive blooms are a primary nectar source for hummingbirds, butterflies, and other native pollinators. Most notably, it supports the Rose-mallow Bee (Ptilothrix bombiformis), a specialist that relies specifically on this genus. Even in winter, the plant remains functional; its sturdy, hollow dead stems provide critical overwintering habitat for stem-nesting bees.

Performance & Site Care

While it naturally occurs in marshes and along riverbanks, Swamp Rose Mallow is surprisingly adaptable to standard garden soils as long as they do not completely dry out. We recommend a good 2-3" layer of mulch to assist with this. It thrives in those "problem" low spots where water tends to sit after a storm. Full sun rewards the grower with sturdier stems and more profuse flowering. To encourage a bushier, more shrub-like habit, you can cut back the growing tips when the plant reaches 12 inches in height.
